    Editorial Policy

    This page explains how the content on SciFiNames.com is actually made, so you can judge how much to trust it. The site is written and maintained by one person, Christian L. Dam, and there is no editorial team behind that name.

    Two kinds of content

    The site contains two things, and they are produced very differently.

    1. The name lists

    Each generator draws from a fixed list of names built ahead of time by combining syllables, prefixes and suffixes chosen to match how names sound in that setting. Across 25 generators there are 121,700 names in total. When you press the button, the site picks ten of them at random. It is not inventing anything on the spot, and it is not calling out to a language model.

    This matters for one honest reason: the lists are finite. If you keep pressing, you will eventually see a name twice. The count shown on each generator page is read directly from that generator's data file at build time, so the number you see is the number of names that actually exist. It cannot drift out of date, because nobody types it in by hand.

    2. The written guides and blog posts

    The prose on the generator pages and every article in the blog is written by hand. Where a post makes a claim about established fiction, such as which Bionicle character is the Toa of Ice, it links to a reference so you can check it rather than taking my word for it.

    Where AI is and is not used

    Google's policies judge content on quality rather than on how it was produced, and I would rather state this plainly than leave it ambiguous.

    • Name lists: generated programmatically. That is the entire point of a name generator.
    • Illustrations: the concept art on the generator pages is AI-generated. None of it is a photograph, and none of it depicts a real person, place or object.
    • Articles and guides: I decide what a piece argues, check the lore claims against sources, and take responsibility for what is published. Nothing goes live that I have not read end to end.

    Sourcing

    Claims about existing franchises are checked against reference material and linked where a reader would reasonably want to verify them. Forum threads and social media posts are not treated as sources.

    I have no professional or academic credentials in linguistics, and nothing here should be read as scholarship on naming or on any real-world language. It is a fan's working knowledge of science fiction, applied carefully.

    Numbers

    Any count quoted on this site is derived from the underlying data at build time rather than estimated. If a page says a generator holds 5,297 names, that is because the file contains 5,297 names. Earlier versions of this site advertised more than ten thousand names on every generator page. That was not true of most of them, and on the smallest it was out by a factor of ten. The claim has been replaced with the real figure everywhere it appeared.

    Corrections

    If something here is wrong, email scifinames@gmail.com and tell me which page. Factual errors are fixed on the page itself. Where a correction changes the substance of what a page said, I note the change on that page rather than quietly editing it away.

    Advertising

    This site carries advertising through Google AdSense, which is what pays for hosting. Advertisers have no input into what is written here, no advance sight of it, and no ability to have content changed or removed. Nothing on this site is sponsored, and there are no affiliate links. What the privacy policy describes about advertising cookies applies to every page.

    Trademarks

    Star Wars, Bionicle, Transformers, Pacific Rim and the other franchises referenced on this site are the property of their respective rights holders. SciFiNames.com is an unofficial fan resource and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or licensed by any of them. Names produced by the generators are original combinations; they are not lifted from those franchises' published material.
